Top 7 oral hygiene tips

Jan, 2024

We know that proper oral hygiene helps us to prevent many problems, not only related to oral health but also to our general health. In this article we’ve set out in a very pragmatic way the 7 main oral hygiene tips that you should follow consistently and with discipline to avoid as many visits to the dentist as possible for more serious situations.

Daily hygiene

Just as important, if not more so, are the appointments with the hygienist. The main purpose of oral hygiene appointments is to diagnose, prevent and maintain the treatments carried out by dentists.

Daily mouth hygiene should be done at home and is essential, but there is always some plaque and tartar that can build up on the teeth, especially in areas where the teeth are very close together and near the gums. A visit to the hygienist every 6 months can solve this problem – scaling, root smoothing, polishing the tooth surface or topical fluoride application are some of the treatments that help restore freshness to the smile.

By having an oral hygiene appointment every 6 months, we also keep an eye on our smile; any problems that may arise are detected by the hygienist at an early stage, allowing for a more effective resolution.

Top 7 oral hygiene tips

Dr Rita Alves and Dr Marta Gameiro are hygienists at the Hugo Madeira Clinic, and here they share 7 oral hygiene tips for an impeccable smile:

  • Brush your teeth at least twice a day.
  • Floss at least once a day – preferably at night.
  • Choose a fluoride toothpaste.
  • Use a toothbrush that suits your teeth and gums – if possible, opt for an electric brush with a soft or medium head.
  • Change your toothbrush every 3 months – a good trick to keep in mind is to associate this change with the change of season.
  • Choose a varied diet rich in nutrients, avoiding sugary foods.
  • Visit the hygienist every 6 months.
