In this brief interview, Dr Isabel Jorge answers the main questions asked on the internet about the invisible braces of the Invisalign brand (a pioneer in this type of treatment).
Q: What is an Invisalign aligner?
A: These aligners are designed specifically for each patient and are replaced consecutively at two-week intervals. As the treatment progresses and the aligners are replaced by the patient themselves, the teeth move week by week until they are perfectly aligned in the established position.
Q: Is Invisalign for all types of cases?
A: Technology has progressed and it is no longer an appliance used only for minor corrections. It is now an answer to almost all cases of dental misalignment.
Q: Can it be used on children?
A: Yes, it can be used on children. It’s a very popular appliance in the USA, and the advantages are diverse, with hygiene, enamel defects and being invisible being the main advantages that make parents opt for this appliance rather than conventional ones.
Q: Will the treatment be painful?
A: Most people will experience some discomfort at the beginning of the treatment. This is normal. It’s a sign that the Invisalign aligners are working, moving the teeth to their final destination. After a few days of having a new aligner fitted, the discomfort should gradually disappear.
If it doesn’t, contact your dentist.
Q: Will wearing Invisalign aligners affect my speech?
A: As with all orthodontic treatments, the aligners may temporarily affect your speech, resulting in a slight change in your pronunciation for a day or two. However, as your tongue gets used to wearing the aligners in your mouth, your pronunciation or slight discomfort in your speech will disappear.
Q: Are there any dietary restrictions?
A: Generally no. Unlike other traditional orthodontic treatments, there are no restrictions on food and drink, as the aligners have to be taken out to eat.
